Deadly Pueblo West Crash Claims Three Lives: Marie, Jesus, and Alonzo Guerrero-Lopez
In a tragic incident that unfolded in Pueblo West, three lives were lost in a devastating car crash. Marie Quintana, 56, Jesus Guerrero-Lopez, 48, and Quintana’s 12-year-old grandson, Alonzo, were fatally struck on the night of August 26 as they were heading back home to Aurora, Colorado, after visiting friends.
The calamity occurred when a 2015 BMW 550, driven by 32-year-old Kohen Garrett Kyle, veered across the center line on North Purcell Boulevard, traveling at speeds reportedly over 100 mph, and collided head-on with the victims’ 2017 Honda CRV. The force of the collision was so immense that young Alonzo was tragically ejected from the backseat. Witnesses recounted that the BMW had been driving recklessly and overtaking other vehicles prior to the crash. Days later, Kyle was arrested by Pueblo Counties deputies on charges that include first-degree murder, vehicular homicide, DUI vehicular homicide, and child abuse resulting in death.
The victims, fondly remembered by their family members, were said to be very close-knit. Alonzo’s grandparents, Quintana and Guerrero-Lopez, played an integral role in his upbringing, accompanying him to school events, swim practices, and taking him on memorable trips, including to Disney Land.
“They were always together, doing everything together… They were here together, and they left together,” reminisced Rita Guerrero Lopez, a grieving family member. She recalled how they had plans for the upcoming Labor Day, now replaced by mourning and a memorial at the crash site. Three crosses stand as a somber reminder, with shards of glass and fragments from their demolished vehicle scattered nearby. The delay in the arrest of the responsible driver added to the family’s anguish, as they struggled with questions and the weight of their sudden loss.
Jasper Quintana, Marie’s brother, expressed the deep void left behind, especially emphasizing the tragedy of young Alonzo’s life being cut short. “It’s tough losing one. But the toughest part is Alonzo, 12 years old. He had his whole life ahead of him,” said Quintana.
In a show of support, a service for the victims will be held on September 6 at Horan & McContay. Additionally, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up in their memory to assist the grieving family.
