Seeking Justice for Jossy Pinto After A Tragic Hit-and-Run

October 19, 2023

On the night of August 21, a series of unfortunate events unfolded in Parker, Colorado, leading to the tragic loss of 49-year-old Jossy Pinto, a beloved family member, and truck driver. Pinto was visiting Colorado for work and was slated to return to his home in Texas the following day.

The cascade of events began with an alleged shoplifting incident at a local Walmart. The suspect, 44-year-old Tory Conyers, hastily left the store with stolen items, jumping into his car to make a quick escape. Parker police, equipped with dashcam footage, captured the initial attempt to pull Conyers over. However, as the suspect refused to halt, police officers, adhering to their policy on shoplifting incidents, decided not to engage in a high-speed chase.

Regrettably, the decision not to pursue did not prevent the tragedy that was about to unfold. Conyers, in his hurried state, ran a red light and struck Jossy Pinto, who was crossing Parker Road in a designated crosswalk. Pinto, who had just shared with his wife that he was heading to Walgreens for snacks, never made that call back home. The suspect, showing no remorse or humanity, didn’t pause or brake but continued speeding away, leaving Pinto’s lifeless body behind.

Back in Texas, the news of Pinto’s tragic and untimely death sent shockwaves through his family. Described by his niece, Cristy Stewart, as “the life of the party,” Pinto was the family’s go-to person, always ready to uplift spirits and instill laughter even in challenging times.

The Parker police, with the aid of the Aurora Police Department’s SWAT team, eventually apprehended Conyers after issuing a Medina Alert. He was found barricaded in a home on Dayton Street, and a “distraction device” was used to facilitate his capture. Conyers, now in custody, faces a slew of charges, including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, misdemeanor eluding, and reckless driving.

The arrest brought a semblance of closure to the grieving family, and Stewart expressed gratitude to the investigators and the Parker community for their unwavering support. The family, however, remains adamant that Pinto’s death could have been prevented, and they hope for a revision in the police’s pursuit policy.
